A-Level Results Day: Looking Beyond the Grades
A-Level Results Day can bring a mix of excitement, relief and disappointment, but a student’s achievements are about far more than the final grades on the page. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer welcomed Zareef Petkar, Assistant Principal for Secondary Data and Assessment at Horizon International School, to discuss how families and students can look beyond headline results and recognise progress, effort and the individual journey behind every grade.
Zareef shared Horizon International School’s strong A-Level results, with 84% of grades awarded A*–B. He also highlighted the importance of value added, explaining that the school achieved an overall value added of just over one and a half grades across all subjects. For Zareef, a student who exceeds their expected grade deserves just as much recognition as someone achieving the highest grades, as both reflect meaningful progress and achievement.
The conversation also explored the emotions surrounding Results Day and the importance of keeping outcomes in perspective. Zareef encouraged parents to look beyond the initial grade, speak openly with their child and acknowledge the effort and progress made throughout their journey. For students whose results may lead to a change of plan, he emphasised that alternative routes can still lead to positive outcomes and that communication with teachers, school guidance counsellors and parents is key when considering next steps.
Looking beyond Results Day, Zareef reflected on the skills young people need to succeed at university and in life, including independence, resilience, problem-solving, agency and strong character. He also advised younger students preparing for Sixth Form to choose subjects with their interests, strengths and ambitions in mind, while building strong study habits from the beginning of Year 12 rather than waiting until Year 13.
For every student opening their results, whether delighted or disappointed, Zareef’s message was to remember the journey, recognise the resilience shown during a challenging year and give themselves some grace. Grades matter, but they are only one part of a much bigger picture.
