Transitioning into the Next School Year: Supporting Children Through Change at Horizon International School
As the academic year draws to a close, many families begin preparing for the transitions that come with a new school year — from moving into a new classroom to joining a new school altogether. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer spoke with Rebecca Cregan, Assistant Principal and Head of Foundation Stage at Horizon International School, about how schools and parents can help children navigate these moments of change with confidence and reassurance.
Rebecca shared how transition initiatives such as step-up and jump-up days help children become familiar with new teachers, classrooms and routines before the new term begins. She explained the importance of creating positive early connections between schools, students and parents, helping children feel more secure and settled as they approach unfamiliar experiences.
The discussion also explored how children can express anxiety about change in different ways, particularly younger children who may struggle to communicate their emotions directly. Rebecca highlighted some of the subtle signs parents can look out for, including changes in behaviour, emotional outbursts or withdrawal from conversations about school, while encouraging families to approach transitions with calmness, positivity and trust.
Helen and Rebecca also discussed the reasoning behind schools mixing friendship groups and classes, explaining how these decisions support children’s social development, resilience and ability to adapt to new environments and relationships. Rebecca reassured parents that while transitions can feel emotional at first, children are often far more adaptable and resilient than adults expect.
The conversation offered practical advice, reassurance and valuable insight for families preparing for the next stage of their child’s educational journey.
