Languages open doors to connection, culture, and cognitive growth, especially in a city as diverse as Dubai. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer spoke with Andrew Clifford, Assistant Principal of Curriculum at Horizon International School, about how schools and families can inspire a genuine love of learning languages.

Andrew reflected on his own experience with languages, sharing how immersion and cultural context are essential to truly mastering another tongue. He highlighted the unique advantage children in Dubai have, growing up surrounded by a blend of languages and nationalities, and emphasised the importance of helping them make connections between different linguistic roots. From a curriculum perspective, he explained that introducing additional languages as early as possible allows children to develop strong neural pathways and more natural pronunciation, skills that become harder to acquire later in life.

The conversation also touched on the school’s return of International Day, a vibrant celebration of culture and community that brings families together to share food, traditions, and pride in their heritage. Looking ahead, Andrew discussed Dubai’s growing focus on Arabic immersion and how this helps students feel more rooted and confident in their surroundings.

For parents navigating multilingual learning at home, Andrew’s message was clear: encourage exposure, start early, and celebrate the connections that language brings.
