Making the Most of the Winter Break: How Horizon International School Encourages Rest, Routine and Meaningful Learning
In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, Amanda Buckley, Assistant Principal and Designated Safeguarding Lead at Horizon International School, explored how families can approach the longer winter break in a way that balances rest, gentle structure and readiness for the new term. She explained that even small routines such as daily reading or brief practice activities help pupils return to school feeling settled and confident.
Amanda highlighted the value of simple daily moments. A visit to the park, time at the pool or revisiting a reading book can keep learning active without overwhelming children after a busy term. She also emphasised the importance of family time and travel, noting that experiences outside the classroom offer rich opportunities to learn about new places, cultures and everyday life skills.
She addressed the reality that many parents will be working during the break and encouraged families not to feel guilty about screen time. Clear limits, short intervals and offering alternatives can help create healthy habits without adding pressure.
For Amanda, the goal of the holiday is balance. Children should rest, enjoy time with loved ones and return in January feeling refreshed and ready to learn. She encouraged parents to follow their child’s interests, whether through picture books, comics or simple storytelling, and to embrace the memorable experiences that make the break meaningful.
